About Me

James Crownover, MD, CAQSM

I am a board certified Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician in Augusta, GA and I am interested in all aspects of human health, performance and of course Sports Medicine.  I grew up in Northeast Atlanta as a very active kid and was always involved in a long list of sports and other outdoor activities.  I am now exploring Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I try to go fishing every chance that I get.  I have a beautiful wife, who is also a physician and two beautiful dogs who take us for lots of walks.  We enjoy working out, cooking and doing anything that gets us out into nature.

Professionally, I attended the University of Georgia for undergraduate training and the Medical College of Georgia for medical school. My residency training was completed in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Institute.  During residency I learned to care for a wide variety of conditions, including traumatic brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord injuries, amputations, burns and many more musculoskeletal and neurological conditions in the young and old.  I further specialized my training by completing a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

I have a special interest in how lifestyle behaviors affect our health and well being.  Variables such as diet, sleep, stress, sun exposure, gut ecology, the body’s entire microbiome, social networks, having a purpose, a sense of belonging, stress management, daily movement and scheduled exercise all play significant and under appreciated roles in our wellness, performance, and overall quality of life.  I find it useful to view these variables through an evolutionary lens when possible.
